Top Rookie Prospects for 2011 Fantasy Baseball (With Help From Keith Law and Jonathan Mayo)
By now you may have seen Keith Law’s Top 100 Prospects Rankings and Jonathan Mayo’s Top 50 Prospects Rankings. While these rankings are excellent for serious baseball fans, unfortunately they don’t help us too much in terms of our Fantasy Baseball Drafts this year. Most of the ranked players will not even come close to contributing in 2011. Mike Trout and Bryce Harper may be ranked #1 and #2 but unless you are in some insane dynasty league where you can keep minor league players for several years (sounds pretty awesome, actually) you aren’t going anywhere near them in a draft. So how do we “fantasize” these rankings?
First, I combined Law’s and Mayo’s rankings to get an average ranking for each player. For example, Harper is ranked #2 by Law and #3 by Mayo, for an average rank of 2.5, which makes him #2 in the sorted list. Where Mayo hadn’t ranked someone on Law’s list (or vice versa) I just used whoever’s rank was available. Second, I looked at each player one-by-one and assigned an anticipated call-up date based on several factors including the experts’ opinions, their age, the highest level in the minors they’ve achieved, and whether or not they have anyone blocking them in the majors. Finally, I organized the list into three tiers based on their year of anticipated arrival to the Majors. For 2011 I estimated the time of year that they would be called up as well. The results should give you an excellent idea for which rookie sleepers to target in your upcoming 2011 fantasy baseball drafts, especially in keeper leagues.
Here is the format:
Rank – Player, Position, Team (Keith Law #/ Jonathan Mayo#/ Average #) EST. DEBUT
